Etymology: On the quite dubious connection with Goth. fera, OHG fiara f. `side, region' (Bezzenberger BB 5, 329 n. 8, Bechtel Dial. 2, 823) and the as little credible connection with OIr. īriu `land' (Stokes KZ 40, 248) s. WP. 2, 40. Whether the Thess. PN Πηρείη (Β 766) belongs here is unknown.
